Cubs, scouts clean up

Filed Under (Community News, Conservation) by johnhouzet on 12-09-2011

THE amount of refuse left or washed up on beaches is not only an eyesore but can also injure sea and birdlife.

As part of its national Climate Change project the boys and girls of First Port Alfred Sea Cubs and Scouts met at Kelly’s Beach on Saturday morning to spend a few hours cleaning up the beach and, at the same time, earning points toward their environmental badge.

The results and findings of each cub and scout troop taking part throughout the country will be collected and collated and presented to the United Nations when it meets to discuss such issues at the International Climate Change Conference in Durban in November and December this year.

As part of its global initiative on climate change, the South African cubs and scouts will also be linking up their German counterparts in November during its Jamboree celebrations.

The boys and girls of the First Port Alfred Sea Cubs and Scouts gave up a Saturday morning last weekend to collect rubbish from the beach. Sixteen children met at Kelly’s Beach and collected several bags of rubbish ranging from bottles and aluminium cans to several metres of plastic netting.
