Pupils take to greens

PORT Alfred Bowling Club and the Department of Sports and Recreation have introduced school children to the increasingly popular game of bowls.

Development officer Lynda Houghton (centre) from the Port Alfred Bowling Club teaches the basics of bowls to Grade 11s Akhona Ntamo (left) and Aphiwe Mbali from Kuyasa Combined School

Pupils from Kuyasa Combined School and Nomzamo High School will be visiting the club once a week to practise and gain valuable skills from development officer Lynda Houghton and other veteran bowls players.

“We need professional people in Port Alfred, like Lynda, to impart knowledge to the youth,” said deputy director for the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), Zwelinzima Nkwinti.

Head of development at the Port Elizabeth Bowls Club, Con Dixie, sponsored bowls especially designed for those starting out.

The development tennis project TotT reported on in February is now in full swing. The four courts at the Port Alfred tennis club have been completely renovated and there is new fencing. According to Nkwinti, this and the rain have caused the delay.

“But we are still looking for more people to help with coaching,” said Nkwinti.

Anyone who would like to offer their services can call Nkwinti on 082-459-1627.
